Resting Metabolic Rate Test

The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test accurately determines how much energy a given person consumes at rest, by calculating the basic amount of energy used during the day, a precise weight loss program can be developed. The test is very simple, it only requires the subject to breathe through a special disposable mask for 15 minutes while the Fitmate measures oxygen consumption. The results of the test are available immediately and can be used to determine an energy balance of diet and exercise to facilitate weight loss.

Cardiovascular Fitness Test

The Cardiovascular Fitness test measures a person's oxygen uptake during exercise across a range of workloads, by extrapolating the results to the person's maximum heart rate we can determine the maximum workload that can be sustained. Elite athletes and casual exercisers can benefit from knowing how fit they are.

This test requires the person to exercise on a treadmill or bike at a range of workloads while breathing through an analyser mask. Normally, the test will be a "submaximal" test where the person works up to 85% of their maximum heart rate, the results are then extrapolated to the maximum theoretical heart rate to give the final result. "Maximal" tests can also be performed, but a maximal test requires a doctor to be present and therefore adds cost to the procedure.

Caloric Cost of Exercise Test

The Caloric Cost of Exercise test measures the amount of energy used across a range of exercise workloads. It is very similar to the Cardiovascular Fitness test except that the goal is not to determine the person's fitness level, only to determine how much energy they "burn" during exercise. Once energy consumption for an exercise session is known, an accurate weight loss program can be devised.
